A long-awaited installment from Ken’s big year… My year started with me birding mostly in the Midlands, seeing many species that are nowadays difficult to find in my home county of Anglesey such as, grey partridge, green woodpecker, willow tit, marsh tit and tree sparrow. I had a short break in Norfolk with Pete James […]

Climbing on Anglesey’s sea cliffs
The Anglesey sea cliffs provide Adventure climbing with a capital A. On Ynys Gybi (Holy Isle), from Rhoscolyn to North Stack there is a wealth of spectacular and challenging opportunities for the climber. A veritable smorgasbord of bewildering rock formations; convoluted geological intrusions, vast sea caves and arches, sea stacks and promontories, all constantly evolving […]

Battling with the weather and illness, Ken still clocks up the species!
A storm overnight on the 18th had trees and power lines down. It was a long hard drive back from Norfolk to Long Eaton as I was feeling very unwell. I dropped Pete off at home and made my way back to Birmingham. An early departure the next morning at 0620hrs to try and avoid […]

Why I do what I do.
Having now gone head-first into nature guiding, there’s a bit of me that cringes when I tell people what I do. As a youngster, I imagined that by now I’d live in Africa protecting lions, as a teenager I thought I’d be a researcher into marine biology and until very recently I thought I’d work […]

Anglesey Birds – Ken’s Review January 2013
I have asked Ken Croft, my friend and now guiding colleague, to write up his birding year so far. “My year started off in Birmingham, seeing the New Year in with my brother and his family. An early morning move saw me in Shrewsbury where I joined Pat and Enid for a New Year’s Day […]

Waxwing Weekend
Ken and I ventured ‘off-island’ on Saturday. We heard tell of a beautiful Desert Wheatear over Llandudno way, flocks of Waxwings and now a Green-Winged Teal! Before we’d even left the house we’s already ‘dipped’ on the Wheatear, Alan (from the Biggest Twitch) had informed it had not been seen and had most probably gone. […]

Seasonal changes.
Well it’s been all change this week as I left behind me the delightful cottage at South Stack where I’ve spent the past year falling in love with each season. In my wisdom I decided to forego another season at South Stack, not because I didn’t love the place, but because I wanted to branch […]
Birthday Treats
Yesterday was my birthday and I felt that the bird world handed me a few presents. Travelling back up the A55 after a night out in Bangor around 3:30am, I did my best impression of my 14 month-old nephew Jack by pointing silently at a Barn Owl as it flew across the road in front […]

My birdrace :)
Well it may seem like a long time ago now, but I thought I should finally get around to telling you about my team’s birdrace. I loved it! Firstly, I got to spend the weekend with my Dad which is always good and secondly, we saw far more bird species than I had ever imagined! […]
